Mac OS 10.67 Updater

Apple has released 10.67 for desktop and server Macs. We recommend you backup your Mac with Time Machine or even better, a full clone with a tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync (neither of these is for the technically challenged) before updating. The easiest way to update is to select “Software Update” from the Apple Menu. If you’re concerned about doing this correctly, MacLab can handle it on the next visit.

Here are the detailed changes, which include a number of fixes and security updates.

A separate security update is available to download and apply that will work on older MacOS systems. Again, check Software Update.

MacLab Server Monitoring

MacLab now offers 24/7 monitoring of your servers so we know when critical systems go down and when they come back up—even while you sleep. The fee for this service? Zero. As long as you’re a MacLab client with a server we maintain, we offer this service free. We like to catch problems as quickly as we can, especially for file, backup and mail servers. Check with us to see if your server is on our system. Chances are it is.

Magic Charger

Stop trashing batteries, or even taking them out and recharging them! Just place your Magic Mouse on the Mobee Magic charger for a good night’s sleep. Let me know if you’d like to get your mouse on one of these. Our partner Dr. Bott will have exclusive distribution.

New MacBook Pros

Apple has updated the MacBook Pro line. The highlights: faster processors including a quad-core in the 15 and 17-inch models, longer battery life, and a new port dubbed “Thunderbolt.” This is a new high-speed port that can be used to connect fast drives and video. According to Apple, the connection is more than 12 times faster than Firewire 800. Also notable: the 13-inch MacBook Pro models now come stock with 4GB of RAM, rather than the previous 2GB. Let us know if you’re interested in getting a new MacBook Pro.

Best MacBook Pro Upgrade

If you have a MacBook Pro you’re outgrowing but don’t want to replace, MacLab has something for you. We’ll swap your hard drive with a super fast (7200rpm) huge (500GB) internal drive. Parts, labor and data transfer all included for $395 (down from December’s deal). If you’d like, we can upgrade the RAM to the max for just a little more and you’ve practically got a new laptop.

Check on Your Drive

Macs, as great as they are, they don’t usually fix themselves. Although I highly recommend you get on one of our discounted maintenance programs, there are a few things you can do yourself including repairing disk permissions and checking your disk directory. Open the Applications folder, then Utilities folder and launch Disk Utility, select your drive icon and click “Repair Permissions.” This will take awhile but can solve a multitude of issues. Next, click “Verify Disk.” This will let you know if there are any serious issues with the hard disk directory. If there are problems, don’t ignore them! Let us know so we can fix them before it’s too late. A corrupted disk directory is the number one cause of lost data.
